WJ Groundwater has been commissioned to dewater aspects of the iconic new stadium for renowned London football team, Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
This ongoing project is a great addition to our company portfolio that already includes completed dewatering projects for football clubs such as Reading, Derby County, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
The new scheme sees the existing stadium expanded to a new capacity of 61,000 fans, including the largest single tier in the UK (the home southern stand) capable of holding 17,000 people. Its new asymmetrical design is now focused towards the southern ‘home end’ giving the structure a unique look. Amongst many other new features, the re-build also includes a fully retractable pitch (for concerts), prominent new entrances at the front and eastern ends, and a ‘sky walk’ so tourists can climb 40 m for views from the stadium.
WJ Groundwater commenced work at White Hart Lane in May 2015 on dewatering the area beneath the north stand. A new basement is to be constructed and is formed by a cofferdam using sheet piles toed into the London clay. In order to drain the sands and gravels inside the cofferdam and remove leakage through the sheet piles to enable the groundworks to be completed in dry conditions WJ installed deepwells at 20 – 40 m intervals around its inner-edge.
“Although this project has been a relatively straight forward installation, depressions in the top of the London clay have been encountered as the main works have continued,” said . “The flexibility of our system has allowed us to make upgrades and alterations to deal with these features speedily and efficiently without delaying the contractor.”
WJ Groundwater is proud to contribute to Tottenham Hotspur FC’s ongoing legacy as one of the UK’s finest sporting clubs.
