Salford Dallas Court Detention Tank

This contract took us North again to Greater Manchester. Salford, to be exact.

As part of the AMP 5 programme of works, United Utilities (UU) proposed to carry out the construction of a detention tank and diversion chamber at the Dallas Court Site.

The works were necessary to improve water quality within Salford Quays and the Manchester Ship Canal by intercepting excess flows from the sewer which were being discharged during periods of high flows. WJ were initially commissioned to undertake a pumping test to determine likely abstraction flow rates and investigate the contamination status of the groundwater within the sandstone.

During the test, a groundwater treatment plant was used to treat the abstracted water before it reached the sewer. The results allowed WJ to design and install the optimal improvement scheme consisting of 8 dewatering wells, each pumped with submersible borehole pumps. The tests also provided sufficient data to show that abstraction and discharge of the groundwater could safely take place without treatment, providing the project with cost, risk and programme savings.
