UK Project Update: WJ Groundwater and the Steamboat Museum

WJ Groundwater ventures into the far north of England for an exciting project at Windermere Steamboat Museum in the Lake District.

The main project is the redevelopment of Windermere Jetty and the museum that is a popular tourist attraction on the banks of the picturesque Lake Windermere. The focus of the rebuild is to create a series of new buildings to house the museum’s collection of vessels, to provide a new visitor centre and further on site facilities.

WJ Groundwater writes chapters for new book – Groundwater Control by CIRIA

The second edition of Groundwater Control – Design & Practice published by CIRIA is now available. It is the de-facto design standard for groundwater control systems in the UK and it also implemented abroad.

After contributing to the first edition, WJ Groundwater’s Chairman and renowned dewatering expert Dr Toby Roberts was invited to be lead author for several chapters in the new volume: Chapter 2 – Surface and Groundwater Control Methods, and Chapter 7 – From Design to Practice. He also assisted across each of the other sections.

UAE Update – A Hole in One – Montgomorie Golf Course

‘A hole in one’ for WJ Groundwater who successfully drained a lagoon at the Montgomerie Golf Course in Dubai, UAE. We were set the challenge, by the main contractor Al Tayer Stocks and their subcontractor Ecocoast Contracting, to drain the golf course lagoon in one day so that a bund could be placed to allow upgrade works to be undertaken.

WJ Groundwater’s Paul Turner (Overseas Director) (front row – far right) attended the Spring 2016 Meeting of the Advisory Board of the Department of Civil Engineering. The board met at the AUD School of Engineering in Dubai on 22nd March (2016).

WJ Groundwater launched its new data collecting application, the Monitoring Dashboard earlier this year, and is pleased to report on its success with our clients and staff.

At WJ Groundwater we collect high quality monitoring data electronically for all our clients via direct or remote streaming data link, which allows real time data to be distributed quickly.

WJ Groundwater’s dewatering project for Pat Munro Ltd is its most northerly job yet. Since opening its office in Scotland in late 2015, the brand has been expanding rapidly and we’re ever so pleased to break into the Scottish Highlands with a project in Dornoch.

UAE Update: Dr Toby Roberts is keynote speaker at DFIMEC 2016

WJ Groundwater’s Chairman Dr Toby Roberts is a keynote speaker at the DFI Middle East Conference 2016 (Deep Foundations Institute) at the American University, Dubai on 11-12 May.

The bi-annual event provides a great opportunity for dewatering experts, geotechnical engineers and industry academics to network, and fact share. There is also a series of talks and demonstrations. Each year the conference revolves around a different theme. This year it is ‘Value Engineering in Geotechnical Practice – Application and Case Histories’.

Qatar Update: Paul Turner attends UK-Lusail Day

WJ Groundwater’s Middle East Director, Paul Turner recently attended the excellent UK-Lusail Day event. Taking place on the 1st of March at the Lusail Real Estate Development Company Headquarters the well-atttended meeting was organised by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI).

Paul was able to meet with several key decision makers to learn more about the ongoing construction of Lusail City. He was lucky enough to spend some time with the Construction Director of Infrastructure for Lusail too.

WJ Groundwater has been named as a finalist in the category Specialist Contractor of the Year (turnover up to £100m) at the 20th Construction News Awards (2016).

Before the awards, all finalists will attend face-to-face judging by members of the 61-strong jury, made up of the most influential clients and experts in the UK.
